Gustav Mahler - More Than Just a Hammer
Mahler was a really interesting guy. If you get past the fact that he stopped his equally interesting wife, Alma, from composing, his life story and his music are vastly worth listening to.
I'm a believer in "trust the tale, not the teller" when it comes to artists whose personal biographies are troubling in one way or another. Mahler is one of those cases. The music. The music is exquisite. Unless you sit in front of the hammer....
And, oh, yeah, he looks just like Lou Reed.
I have just found this amazing page of silhouettes by Otto Bohler - showing Mahler conducting. The pictures are extremely animated and clearly show Mahler's distinctive profile. As I type this I wonder ... could one make a gif out of them somehow?
